From My Handlebars to Yours

John Marshall, Club President
January 2012

John Marshall

First, let me say how honored I was to be asked to stand as president of SCCCC. When I first joined the club, I was deeply impressed by the care with which the group rides were organized, and the warm welcome at the social events. My wife, Lisa Deverse, and I joined SCCCC in 2008. We have greatly enjoyed the inclusive atmosphere of the club and members.

In case we have not met in person, let me introduce myself. I’m John Marshall. Originally from Britain, I moved to the US in 1992 at the age of 26. When I yell ‘Car back’ you may think of Phil Liggett and his Tour de France commentary (on the other hand, my accent has softened so much that when I’m in Britain I have been mistaken for an American.) I usually ride a red, Caletti, custom, steel-framed bike, but more about that in a future column. I’ve been riding regularly for about 12 years, and have become more dedicated since joining SCCCC.

So, what do I plan for the club? My first priority is to spend the next couple of months learning from the current board, past presidents and board members what the historical challenges have been. Next I want to gather suggestions from the board regarding what we want the focus of the club to be in 2012. And that brings me to my third immediate priority: understanding what YOU want the club to be. What is it that you most value about the club? Is there anything more you would like the club to be? Please drop me a note by email.

SCCCC is greater than the sum of its members. Thank you for trusting me with the leadership of the club.
