Phil race note: Originally Craig, his wife Jodi, and I intended to stay just for the first few laps of this race, but it was so exciting we wound up watching the whole thing. Initially Performance/Ritchey and Alto Velo both had a couple people in breaks up the road, but all were brought back in. Finally Larry Nolan, somehow, broke away from the pack keeping a good 15 to 20 sec lead for the rest of the race.

Meanwhile, Performance/Ritchey and Alto Velo continued to keep an eye on each other. Consequently, no other breakaways managed to work while the two largest teams seemed determined to keep things together. A crash, on the far side of the course near the cement barriers saw quite a few riders limp back into the race.

The race for second came down to a field sprint which, not surprisingly, Freddy Markham won but not without some stiff competition.

Joe's 9th placing for Sunnyvale-Cupertino CC, eased Craig and my non-placing in the earlier Cat 4 finish. Way to go Joe! Ok, so who said I had to be impartial?

Phil's race note: This turned into a race of attritian. I was a victim at about lap 12, my poor teammate, who was riding really well, flatted a few laps after that. Good, crazy racing though! I think we all were sliding quite a bit around the course especially in the wet hairpin (the race went off at about 9am before it had a chance to dry). I was even spinning my rear tire going up the 3rd street hill. Amazingly I don't think there was any crashes in our group. My hat's off to Ray, Craig and Josh who, unlike myself, had the presense of mind to form a chase group and tough out the rest of the race.

In the final sprint Brian Ort just eased past Richard Juarez for the finish. Both were pushing some monster gears up the hill on 3rd!
